🏗️ Design and Construction Highlights
The architectural concept is entirely driven by the sloping terrain, resulting in a tiered structure that allows every dining level to access the breathtaking exterior views.
1. Vertical Layout and Dining Experience
With an assumed 4000 sq.ft spread across three main floors, the restaurant is configured to offer diverse dining environments:
-
Lower Level: Likely an intimate indoor dining area with strong foundational stone cladding and large glass panels, providing a cozy atmosphere close to the ground.
-
Middle Level: A primary dining hall or private events space. This level features an expansive deck/balcony area with glass railings, ideal for mid-level views.
-
Upper Level (Top Deck): The highlight, featuring a covered outdoor/semi-outdoor seating area with glass roofing (as seen in the image). This level is perfect for a bar, lounge, or al fresco dining, offering the most dramatic, unobstructed views.
-
Vertical Circulation: A service tower (visible on the left) houses vertical circulation (staircase and possibly a service lift) and utility rooms, keeping the dining areas open and view-focused.
2. Materials and Aesthetics
The design uses a harmonious mix of durable and natural materials, contributing to a rustic yet sophisticated ambiance:
-
Stone Cladding: The main load-bearing walls and foundation levels are finished in a prominent rough-cut stone cladding. This choice anchors the building to the hillside and contrasts beautifully with the modern elements. * Glass Walls: Floor-to-ceiling glass walls dominate the facades of all three dining levels, ensuring that patrons feel fully immersed in the natural setting of Wattegama.
-
Wood Accents: Warm wooden ceilings and flooring are utilized in the deck areas and interiors, balancing the coolness of the stone and glass.
-
Night Ambiance: The design cleverly incorporates internal lighting that warmly illuminates the interior spaces, transforming the building into a glowing beacon on the hillside at night.
3. Site Integration
The structure is meticulously integrated with the slope:
-
Foundation: The multi-story design relies on deep, stable foundations and potentially retaining structures to secure the building to the steep, densely vegetated incline.
-
Accessibility: The bottom level connects seamlessly to a paved forecourt, making the entrance easily accessible, likely from a main access road (implied by the paved area in the foreground).
🚧 Article: Progress on Wattegama’s New Culinary Landmark
The development phase is currently underway, focusing on the structural framing and the challenging installation of the tiered decks and stone facade work. Mr. Herath’s vision is rapidly taking shape, promising a venue where the spectacular Kandy landscape becomes an integral part of the dining experience.
We anticipate this project will soon become a premier destination, offering exceptional cuisine paired with some of the best views in the region.
Stay tuned for more construction updates and the grand opening announcement!
